Abiraj Homestay at Tinchuley

Discussion over the tour program:
First we determined to visit some places in Sikkim, but as we had some members with us who had visited many places in Sikkim, we decided to select a spot everybody got agreed upon. After much deliberation we determined to visit Tinchuley.

Journey begins: Our journey began by Darjeeling mail from Sealdah (Kolkata) on 03-01-2015 and we reached New Jalpaiguri station next morning. We hired two cabs and reached Tinchuley. It is in Darjeeling district, about 80 km from Siliguri and 3 hours journey.

Our experience at Tinchuley: As our car reached at Abiraj homestay, we were cordially welcome by Abiraj and his family, and at first sight we were fallen in love with splendor of the place. We started feeling at home away from home. Chetan, a young student and Abiraj’s relative, helped us shifting our luggage with smiling face. Chetan kept our lunch ready and served delicious food. We finished lunch with chicken, dal and vegetable curry. All vegetables were produced in his own garden.

After lunch Abiraj led us to his tea garden and told us about Tinchuley. It is a spectacular place. Being a clear day we could see snow-capped Kanchenjunga over the horizon.  Literally Tinchuley means oven, three peaks look like an oven. It is a very small village located at the height of 5800 ft, with tea garden all around and has earned reputation for homestay. Tinchuley was declared as a model village by World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

View from Abiraj Homestay:

Sitting on the balcony of the cottage or at the open space in front of the house in the morning and evening is a breathtaking experience. Abiraj showed us the location of Gangtok, Kalimpong town, Delo hill, Namchi, Himalayan range up to Nepal, Tsangu and Nathula.

At night sitting on the verandah we could see lights of towns in the lap of the hills arranged in such a natural way that it took a shape of Indian map. It is really a rare experience.

Places of Interest around Tinchuley :
1) Peshoke tea garden with view of snow covered Kanchenjunga in the background is a pleasant experience. It is about 15 minutes walk through the forest. We started going up to the hill along the narrow trail through the tea garden and reached at the top of the hill. Here we found three teenage girls sitting on top of a big rock. I tried to climb the top, but failed to climb. I tried to climb the top again from back side, but still failed. This is a challenging place for rock climbers.

3) Tinchuley monastery, a beautiful place with flying Buddhist prayer flags on either side of the track. As we approach the monastery, we were excited seeing orange orchard full of oranges.
4) View of the confluence of Teesta and Rangeet river from Lovers’ Point is magnificent feeling.
5) Visit to the lovely Orange Orchard and factory processing fresh orange juice at Baramangwa was amazing. We bought oranges at Rs. 60 per dozen. There were other various qualities of oranges. We ate many orange that were lying under the trees.

Best time to visit Tinchuley: From October to April is best time to visit. It is very cold here in December and January. We visited in January. It was chilling cold. With room heater and under clean cozy blanket we all slept well.
